The Beatson and Western Infirmary Hospital Glasgow have been donated £45,000 raised at the 2004 Twilight Walk.
Statement from Professor David George, Regis Professor of Surgery:- "With these funds we intend to employ a Research Technician to establish and manage a comprehensive tumour tissue and blood bank from our breast cancer patients. The funding that you have so generously raised would support such a post for at least two years if not a little longer. The aim of this would be to collect blood samples before surgery on all our breast cancer patients as well as collecting blood samples during treatment and follow-up. In addition we would also store a small tissue sample taken from each individual patients breast cancer. Samples would only be taken after receiving full informed consent from patients and with Ethical Committee approval. These blood and tumour banks are of immense value and can be used for a multitude of projects. In particular one can look at markers of outcome that may predict prognosis or indeed predict response to specific treatments. It also means that when new markers of outcome are discovered we could return immediately to our tumour bank and assess their value." |
